The bandits, who are said to be from Lodge, Georgetown, were
captured after they had fled into a bushy area near Scotsburg Beach.
A third bandit, who is reportedly from Berbice, remains at large.
Kaieteur News understands that a pistol with a solitary round and
masks were recovered from the suspects.
According to reports, Sookdeo Mootoo and his wife were in their yard
at Number 74 Village, Corentyne at around 05:00 hrs, yesterday when
three men, who were armed with at least one handgun, pounced on
them.
The robber with the handgun struck Mootoo on the head, but the
robbers were forced to flee empty-handed after police were alerted
to the attack.
According to sources, the bandits fled in the vicinity of the
Scotsburg Beach, where they concealed themselves in some bushes.
But members of the Rampoor Community Policing Group scoured the area
and eventually spotted footprints that convinced them that the men
were in the area.
Villagers who were conducting religious ceremonies near the beach
confirmed that the robbers were hiding nearby, and the community
policing members and police surrounded the area.
Eventually, two of the robbers emerged from the bushes, but
retreated hastily after the community policing group members
discharged a few rounds in their direction.
The community policing members then pursued the men and managed to
capture two of them, who said that they were from Princes Street,
Lodge and Hill Street, Lodge.
Meanwhile, the injured Sookdeo Mootoo was taken to the Skeldon
Hospital where he remains a patient.
