Laid off bauxite workers at computer classes

"You are learning something that is right on the front line. It will keep you literate and up to date, so I urge you to attend these classes and maybe it could be an opening for new careers."

This is what Prime Minister Samuel Hinds told bauxite workers who are currently being trained in Information Technology (IT) after being laid off during the two-month closure of OMAI Bauxite Company Incorporated (OBMI). He made the remark while addressing the workers during a visit to the region at the weekend.

On June 12, President Bharrat Jagdeo launched the initiative to provide free training to workers and pay them a stipend of $25, 000 per month on the condition that they attend classes one day weekly at the Linden Technical Institute. This would ensure they learn a skill and to assist in providing for their families while they are off the job.

OBMI closed its operations because it cannot sell the projected amount of bauxite per month as was anticipated, and was forced to lay off workers. Government secured 20 additional computers for the institute to boost its training facilities. Some 330 workers are benefiting from the initiative.

While in the region, the Prime Minister distributed sport gear to several clubs including the Young Lions Sport Club.

The Prime Minister also walked about in the town and met residents who took the opportunity to raise issues affecting the development of their community.

President Jagdeo does not possess Indianess. This is troubling. When the PNC was in charge Indians had to flee to Richmond Hill and Scarborough and anywhere they could. The solution for us is to bring these opinions and ideas in the open and keep on speaking out.
