Rapist/killer disregarded respect for the elderly-- CIOG

The Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) yesterday expressed profound sadness at the rape and murder of Dhanwantie, the 79-year-old blind Wakenaam resident.
In a statement issued yesterday, the CIOG noted that the perpetrator of this 'horrendous' act and 'destructor' of life against a handicap and innocent citizen must be brought to justice.
The perpetrator of this heinous crime, the statement added, committed the act while under the influence of alcohol and showed no mercy to the victim.

“He has total disregard for the precious gift of life, law and order, respect for the elderly and women, which are the foundation and fabric of a stable society,” the statement said.
The organization is calling on the law enforcement agencies, all NGO's and every Guyanese to put an end to all crime in the country.
“We demand a halt to the issuing of licences to operate parlours and liquor stores, and encourage all to work towards creating healthy alternatives which will ensure the development of the individual and the society,” the statement said.
The body of the late of the Dhanwantie, also called 'Auntie', was laid to rest at Wakenaam Island yesterday afternoon following a post mortem that was conducted at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GHPC).
The cause of death was given as asphyxiation, compression, injuries to the jaw and multiple blunt trauma.
Scores of residents gathered at the Sans Souci Masjid to pay their final respects to the woman.
According to reports from the island, many residents were disappointed since there was only a small opening to view the face of the woman.
Sheik Moen Hack, of the CIOG, along with other members of the organization travelled to Wakenaam for the funeral.
Hack called on the residents to organise themselves regardless of their religious persuasions against the number of rumshops on the island, which he felt contributed to the murder of the old, blind woman.
He urged the residents to ensure that all children attend school and be meaningfully employed.
In a moving tribute, Hack referred to the similar murders of 12-year-old Julie Sooklall, and 75-year-old business woman 'Auntie Millie' who were brutally raped, beaten and murdered.
Dhanwantie was found dead in her bottom flat house at Sans Souci, Wakenaam lying in a pool of blood on Independence Day.
She was raped, beaten and murdered.
An 18-year-old resident has since confessed to the crime and charges are to be laid shortly.
